Hi Everyone! After completing this week's asynchronous work on algebra expression I was curious to do some more research on the ways algebraic expressions is broken down to students. Like most, my goal as a teacher would be how to be better at facilitating group work in the classroom. I found this video via teachingchannel.org with a teaching strategy of algebraic expression. The teacher uses objects (i.e. fruits) as his form of showing his students strategies to better understand algebraic expressions such as variables and equations. Hi all ! Hope everyone is having a great week! For this week's post I wanted to highlight JEOPARDY! as a fun in classroom activity to use with students across all grade levels. I personally love jeopardy, although I may not know the answers a majority of the time I find it's a great way to stimulate the brain! I think using a game like Jeopardy as an in classroom activity would be a fun way to assess students and monitor students understanding of mathematics content. Using this resource can overcome any challenges teachers have to determine which topics may need some additional attention, for students to gather in depth understanding of content. It can also serve as a way to encourage students to engage by collaborating with one another to find multiple ways of problem solving thinking. Hi everyone! For this post, I wanted to focus on some forms mathematics plays into real life scenarios much of what I use currently at work. As some of you may already be familiar I currently work in the fashion industry and constantly working with numbers. A major part of my role is making sure on paper i.e Powerpoint presentations and financial reports, our sales numbers look good for big customers before major management meetings. So these documents and presentations will involve a lot of rounding, because the reality is no business partner wants to sit there and calculate exact numbers to get an idea of how their business is going especially if we're working with really large numbers...and I mean millions. After week 8 reading from principles to actions text regarding access & equity, I was inspired to research ways English Language Learners are being taught content and topics. This week I wanted to focus on giving homage to EL students of the second grade. Based on the NYS common core standards, second grade should focus on : 1. extending understanding of base-ten notation 2. building fluency with addition and subtraction 3. using standard units of measure 4. describing and analyzing shapes Building fluency triggered my thinking immediately with regards to students that require the English Language Programs. I personally really enjoy working on word problems because I get to break something apart.
