Algebraic Expression Technique
Hi Everyone!
After completing this week's asynchronous work on algebra expression I was curious to do some more research on the ways algebraic expressions is broken down to students. Like most, my goal as a teacher would be how to be better at facilitating group work in the classroom.
I found this video via teachingchannel.org with a teaching strategy of algebraic expression. The teacher uses objects (i.e. fruits) as his form of showing his students strategies to better understand algebraic expressions such as variables and equations.
Common Core Standard covered in the video:
Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.EE.A.1
In watching this video I think the teacher mastered how to use manipulative to teach his students algebra and made it enjoyable for the entire class despite it being an older group of kids. His approach to refer to numbers as magic was certainly a motivating factor for students to learn how to strategize using algebra. I liked that the teacher was able to create a real life scenario through mathematics, i.e. his coffee shop skit, which encourages collaborative learning. A concept and teaching method that can be applied across all grade levels, teaching various topics required in the common core standards. Collaboration plays a huge role in a classroom in order for students to successfully engage and learn from a lesson. I really enjoyed the way this teacher collaborated with his students and led them to engage with one another.
